CA Technologies emphasizes non-techie accessibility with new ERwin release

Accessibility and intuitiveness are the key themes in CA Technologies' new release of its ERwin r8 software.

ERwin, one of CA's oldest products, is a data modelling solution that creates a blueprint of a data structure. The name comes from Entity Relationship (ER) WINdows, and dates from the days when it competed against large mainframe modelling tools. Its value proposition has always been allowing a database to be build solely from the graphics it generates, so that you don't have to be an expert in platforms, and don't have to know the language to build the database.

Still, CA acknowledged that in today's world, where end users are accustomed to the graphics capabilities of a Visio or PowerPoint, ERwin was showing its age -- and that's largely what this version set out to remedy.

"Our messaging with this release is that ERwin has grown up," said Donna Burbank, senior director of product marketing for data management at CA Technologies. "The market has evolved. Today you have self service BI, with business people building their own BI reports, where they need to get different siloes talking." Burbank said that while it might only be about 15 percent of execs who want to have this capacity, that's still a significant audience, especially since they are more likely to be proactive, hands-on people.
