Design Layers

A design layer represents a phase in the model development process. Using design layers, you can create separate models that are related and linked to one another. Within each design layer, you can make design decisions that allow you to transition from one layer to another. Possible examples of design layers include: enterprise, conceptual, logical, generic physical, physical, and data warehouse. You can use four basic model types (logical, physical, dimensional, logical/physical) for different design layers in your organization.

An organization can break the model development process down further into such design layers as conceptual (to represent higher level logical design choices) and generic physical (to make common design decisions before deriving multiple physical models for specific environments).
